Privacy Policy
Established: October 21, 2026 · Last updated: October 28, 2026
NERD (“we”) sets out the following policy for the information handled by the iOS app “dot location” (the “App”).
This English version is a translation. If there is any difference between the two, the Japanese version prevails.
Summary
- Your location history (when and where you were) is saved only on your iPhone. It is never sent to our servers.
- Coordinates are sent to Apple and OpenStreetMap services to show addresses and find nearby places.
- Crash reports and usage analytics are sent without location data, addresses, or text you entered.
- Calendar Sync (Pro) writes places and times to the calendar you choose, only when you turn it on.
- Pro is bought through Apple’s App Store. We never receive your payment details.
1. Information stored on your device
The App stores the following on your iPhone. There is no account, and we never receive this information.
- Location data (latitude, longitude, time and accuracy)
- Logs of stays, trips, arrivals and departures, and the routes you traveled
- Areas (name, icon, coordinates and radius) and your Home history
- Display settings (appearance, theme color, app icon, start of week, and so on)
If you use iPhone backups (iCloud Backup or backups to a computer), this information is included in them.
2. Permissions
- Location (Always): Used to record your movements while the App is closed.
- Motion & Fitness: The motion history recorded by your device (such as stationary or in a vehicle) is used to detect stays and departures. It is not sent anywhere.
- Calendars (Full Access): Requested only when you turn on Calendar Sync. See “4. Calendar Sync” for details.
3. Information sent to outside services
To provide its features and improve quality, the App communicates with the following outside services. Information sent to them is handled under each service’s privacy policy.
Apple MapKit
Includes location- Recipient
- Apple Inc.
- Purpose
- Showing addresses, searching for places, and displaying maps
- Data sent
- Coordinates to convert into addresses, and search text with the coordinates of the map center
- Policy
- https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
Overpass API (OpenStreetMap)
Includes location- Recipient
- overpass-api.de
- Purpose
- Fetching shops and places around where you stayed (place suggestions)
- Data sent
- The coordinates of a surrounding area (a range of latitude and longitude)
- Policy
- https://overpass-api.de/
Sentry
No location- Recipient
- Functional Software, Inc. (United States)
- Purpose
- Investigating crashes
- Data sent
- Where the error occurred, what the app was doing just before it (such as screen changes), the device model, and the OS and app versions
- Policy
- https://sentry.io/privacy/
TelemetryDeck
No location- Recipient
- TelemetryDeck GmbH (Germany)
- Purpose
- Understanding which features are used
- Data sent
- The kind of action (for example, creating an area or opening Stats), values from a fixed set of choices such as counts, and an anonymized identifier
- Policy
- https://telemetrydeck.com/privacy/
Apple App Store (In-App Purchase)
No location- Recipient
- Apple Inc.
- Purpose
- Buying Pro, restoring purchases, and redeeming codes
- Data sent
- The product being bought and the confirmation of the transaction. Payment details are handled by Apple and never reach us
- Policy
- https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
We never send coordinates, addresses, area names, shop names or text you entered to Sentry or TelemetryDeck. Screenshots, screen layouts and whether you bought Pro are not sent either. What we do send cannot be linked to you personally.
4. Calendar Sync (Pro, optional)
Calendar Sync is a Pro feature and is off by default. When you turn it on, stays that ended at least three hours earlier are added as events to the calendar you choose. This also happens in the background while the App is closed.
- Each event includes the area name (or the address if there is none), the time of the stay, latitude and longitude, and links to Apple Maps and Google Maps. The latitude and longitude are also set as the event’s location.
- Events are written in the language the App is showing at the time (Japanese or English).
- If the calendar you choose is an iCloud or Google calendar, events sync to that service. Syncing is done by iOS; the App never communicates directly with Google or similar services.
- Existing events are read only to list the calendars you can save to and to check whether a stay has already been added. The App never stores their contents, uses them to detect stays, or edits or deletes them.
- Stays from before you turned on Calendar Sync are not added.
5. Buying Pro
Pro is a one-time In-App Purchase on the App Store. Purchases, restores and code redemptions are processed by Apple, and we never receive your payment details or Apple Account information.
Whether you have Pro is determined by your device asking Apple for your purchase status. We do not store any record of your purchase on our servers.
6. Export
From “CSV” under “Backup” in Settings, you can export your logs, areas and routes as CSV files. You choose where exported files are saved or shared.
7. Deleting your information
You can delete logs and areas within the App. Deleting the App removes all of its information from your device. Events added to your calendar remain in the calendar.
Because information sent to Sentry and TelemetryDeck cannot be linked to you personally, we may not be able to delete a specific person’s information on request.
8. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when the App’s features or outside services change. Changes take effect when they are posted on this page.
